Eclipse 2017 - How to NOT Burn Your Retina

Solar Eclipse Safety – Must Read

eclipse tips for safe viewing

The solar eclipse is coming on August 21st but are you prepared to watch it happen?

There are eclipse viewing glasses that are being distributed out that will not protect your eyes completely. Before you look at the sun make sure your eclipse glasses meet the ISO 12312-12 international standard.

NASA and their partner, the American Astronomical Society, have verified that these five manufacturers are making eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard for such products: American Paper Optics, Baader Planetarium (AstroSolar Silver/Gold film only), Rainbow Symphony, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17.Image result for solar eclipse safety

Eclipse glasses are necessary any time the sun is even partially exposed (partial eclipse). During the total eclipse is the only time that you are able to look towards the sun without the eclipse glasses because technically you are only looking at the moon. This is only a short period of time that eclipse glasses are not needed. Depending on your location this can range from 2-3 minutes of total eclipse time.

If you plan on watching the eclipse from Utah there you will only be a partial eclipse and not a total eclipse, so viewing glasses are required to protect your eyes the entire time.

Eclipse viewing safety chart

This is a once in a life time experience to see a total eclipse so make sure you don’t miss it, but more important make sure you protect your eyes with the correct filter.

IMPORTANT WARNING:  Do NOT view the eclipse through binoculars or telescopes while wearing the filters mentioned above.  To use Binoculars, you MUST purchase approved filters that go on the front of the optics of the device, not behind the optics.   The optics of binoculars or telescopes concentrate the sun's rays and can actually burn through a filter placed between your eye and the binoculars.

For more information on other safe ways to view the eclipse, please CLICK HERE FOR A FLYER FROM NASA.

Healthy Contact Lens Habits

HEALTY CONTACT LENS HABITS REALLY MATTER!!!

The poor habits of some of our contact lens patients are a great concern to us as eye care professionals.  Unhealthy habits with contacts lead to over 1 million doctor visits per year in the United States for contact lens related eye infections.  Corneal ulcers are most commonly caused by poor contact lens habits and can lead to permanent loss of vision in severe cases.

We invite you to check out this link from the Center for Disease Control with important tips for keeping your eyes healthy with contact lenses!    Here's the link:  http://www.cdc.gov/contactlenses/protect-your-eyes.html

Be wise!  Be healthy with your eyes!
